I too have startled my family with the oohs and aahs watching Federer wield his racket. Karen post # 2 and #3 has eloquently captured the Federer experience. ![]() ![]() It was an inspiring beacon of light in an otherwise dark time, to know that the human race is capable of producing the greatness that is Roger Federer. While in the midst of the turmoil of the financial markets in mid-September, when there was serious talk of our heading into another Great Depression, I was even more happy that I had finally seen Roger Federer Of my favorites–in an entirely new light. Like many readers, I had little idea that Wallace had been severely depressed, and saw his short story “The Depressed Person”–one I carefully noted the date of his death and the date on which Roger Federer won his 5th US Open,Īnd I also hoped that Wallace had gained some pleasure from watching it. Wield his magic wand, and the same thought also passed through my mind when I heard of his death in mid-September. ![]() I have been an admirer of David Foster Wallace’s writing long before I ever saw Roger Federer I apologize if my earlier comment sounded in any way insensitive, in light of David Foster Wallace’s suicide.
